Organic milk is so much better for our children than ‘ordinary’ milk. Researchers at the University of Newcastle found that organic milk has on average
- a 50% higher vitamin E content;
- a 75% higher beta carotene content;
- 70% higher levels of omega 3 EFAs; and
- two to three times as much lutein and zeaxanthin (antioxidants)
than milk from conventially reared cows.
Knowing all that is enough for me to make sure that my children have nothing else on their cereal in the mornings. But now there is another reason to buy organic milk. The Independent have reported that with supermarkets driving the price of milk down, down, down, farmers are considering turning to ‘battery’ production to provide the quantities of milk required cheaply enough to keep them in business.
Raising the demand for organic milk may help stop this madness, and make sure that our country’s farm animals have the lives that they deserve.
